If there’s one constant in life, its change. Whether you fear it or embrace it, most of the time you have no choice but to accept it.

2016 has been a year of change on a grand scale. In May, the UK voted out of the European Union. Yesterday America elected reality TV host and recently turned republican Donald Trump, their President. We have yet to see the greatest effects of those decisions, though it’s true to say both have caused significant disruption in the mind set of each nation, if not yet in trade (currency fluctuation aside). You would have to be wearing powerful rose-tinted glasses to see the campaigns as well-managed, to think the transition will be smooth and efficient, or to believe there’ll ever be unanimous support.  If you’re looking for examples of how to effectively manage change – these aren’t it, at least, not yet.

Thankfully, change management in the usual business context is a comparatively less daunting and controllable process – although business will have to adapt to both seismic events. However that’s not to say there aren’t traps the unwary can fall into, or a danger the disruption could do more harm than good. It’s crucial to strategize and plan effectively, for eventualities, clearly defining key goals the change will achieve as well as how change will be clearly communicated to all connected stakeholders.
