Have you ever considered your purpose in life? Do you have a purpose? Or maybe a better question should be-do you actually know what a purpose is and why it’s important to have one?

Many of you will be thinking of a purpose as we speak. Perhaps it goes along the lines of: “My purpose is to help my organisation deliver success” or “My job is to help my team excel”. It’s likely that you’ve defined your purpose around your work. But that’s only a part of the real you and you limit your aspirations and are likely to fail to achieve your most ambitious professional and personal goals if you only ever focus on your work purpose.

Purpose is increasingly being touted as the key to navigating the complex and ambiguous word we face today but describing our own sense of individual purpose is extremely difficult.

It may be helpful to think of your personal purpose as your ‘own brand’. It’s not what you do, but how you do your job and why-the strengths and passions that you bring to the table no matter where you’re seated. It’s what everyone recognises as uniquely ‘you’ and would miss most if you were gone. Purpose is not a list of education, experience and skills.

So how can you define your brand and your purpose? This will take some time and some reflection. Can you bring to mind the stories that people tell about you or that you tell about yourself? What are some of the common threads? What makes you laugh? What did you love doing? What experiences have shaped your life? From this, some themes will emerge. Jotting down a few words or phrases about you, is the next step. Are you able to write a statement that encapsulates you and your purpose? It needn’t be War and Peace. Try turning it into only two or three words. Once you’ve crafted your purpose, write a paragraph to explain it using your stories and experience.

Finally, it’s time to put your purpose into action using your own meaningful language and setting incremental goals that focus on the future, is unique to you and takes a holistic view of your work and family.
