The answer might surprise you.

Don’t wait until your boss approaches you to tell you that you’ve been selected for redundancy. Don’t wait until after you’ve quit your current role. Surprisingly, the best time to contact us is when you’re very happy in your current role. In fact, the best time of all is when you’ve just had a stunning success.

That may seem very odd, but people who manage their careers well know that making career decisions is best done when you’re happy and in a stable frame of mind, when you can think clearly and rationally and weigh up all your options. Getting the news that you’ve been selected for redundancy or resigning from your position are normally traumatic times. In the heat of the moment, it’s possible to get your choices confused.

A favourite saying that made the rounds a few years ago, makes sense today – “Once you accept your next role, start planning your exit strategy”. Part of the rationale for this is easy to understand. You should always be looking ahead. The role you accept today should be in preparation for your bigger game plan. Keeping your eye on the goal a few steps ahead makes your choices sensible and planned ones. By the time you get that uncomfortable feeling in your gut about what’s going on in the office it may be too late. Knowing when to go is about taking control of your own destiny – it’s not about when external factors force the issue.
