When a rapidly growing digital document automation and storage company wanted to expand into the UK and EMEA, they required dedicated, local marketing support for their UK sales team. The company’s Global Director of Marketing contacted Marketing Moves Managing Director Melvin Day to manage this crucial recruitment process. This was a great opportunity with a growing, global tech company to take a leadership role with an award-winning marketing team, to help shape the strategy as they entered new markets.
Founded in 2008 and headquartered in Houston, Texas, USA, SmartVault allows accounting and business customers to collect, manage, prepare, and share both their firm’s and their clients’ documents, with a single, integrated document management and client portal solution.
The Senior Marketing Manager was required to grow and maintain a healthy sales pipeline that converted leads to revenue – creating both the strategy and execution of campaigns designed to engage customers. SmartVault was looking for a team player that thrives in a highly collaborative environment to get the job done. With a small team, they needed someone who makes a big impact, so they were seeking a go-getter that’d be ready to jump right into the action!
The main hurdle around this role involved finding someone who possessed maximum personality, yet required minimal supervision, who would quickly build credibility with the local sales team. It meant that the recruitment process could not have one single focus as so many often do, instead it needed both a mix of marketing expertise and an action-oriented approach.
How Mel overcame this obstacle is what separates both him from junior recruitment consultants and Marketing Moves from generic recruitment agencies: he spent a significant amount of time with the SmartVault team, to really get to the nub of what they were looking for.
Mel liaised at length with both the Global Director of Marketing Abbie Deaver and the Head of SmartVault Global Dania Buchanan, who were great in being available, open to discussion and were happy to spend the time getting across their values and approach.
This upfront investment from all parties allowed Mel to clearly understand the requirements of SmartVault and get a strong insight into their culture, from which he created a clear, comprehensive brief – which ensured the success of the project.
With all this information recorded, Mel began by using the Marketing Moves database – built up over almost 30 years – and then targeted suitable new candidates through Linkedin.
From a longlist of 12 suitable candidates, four made it to the shortlist. Interviews comprised of a mix of telephone and video calls, together with online testing, before the final stage where the SmartVault marketing leadership team flew over to the UK for final interviews.
