Hiring Contractors and Temporary Workers

By Laura Barrett – Partner, Contract Recruitment

With the huge uncertainty surrounding employment during the Coronavirus pandemic, companies are understandably freezing hiring or indeed letting staff go which they cannot afford to keep, or even pay.

Some companies however still do need to hire, so what do they do?

The answer could be hiring a temporary employee or contractor – either on a short term or ongoing contract basis to provide additional support to marketing teams where required.

Generally contractors are over-qualified for the role they’re doing so there’s no need for training – they can hit the ground running to achieve what are usually pre-defined project goals.  Most contractors are used to working remotely too, which is especially relevant at the moment!

We’ve seen a large increase in the number of recent contract roles we’ve been asked to deliver, probably because ever-present reasons such as maternity leave cover are still required during the lockdown.

Similarly, the new ways of working forced upon most companies often require a dedicated project or change management professional to deliver successfully.

Marketing Moves has recruited contractors since 1991, for the following reasons:

  • Our Network

As the UK’s most experienced technology marketing recruitment agency, we’ve been painstakingly building our network since 1991. This means we have a database of tens of thousands of skilled candidates, we know where they work, where they live and what career path they’re looking to take.

  • Sector Knowledge

Because we’ve worked with thousands of Technology companies, we know first hand what the drivers in the market are, and both how and why companies are looking to grow and gain or retain competitive advantage. Because of this, when a client comes to us with a requirement, we can offer objective market advice which at times can change the direction of the recruitment project for the better.

  • Latest Trends

All of our consultants are connected with thousands of technology marketing professionals on platforms like Linkedin, which means we read all the latest thought leadership, whether it be Cyber Security or SOC-as-a-service. So when a client needs to explain a niche area of growth, the chances are we can add value to the discussion rather than requiring to be educated about it.

  • Employment Legislation

Hiring a contractor has become a minefield, with new and continually updated laws covering such things as IR35, AWR and workers rights. We ensure that our candidates and clients stay on the right side of the law so they can concentrate their efforts on the role for which the candidate was required.

  • Events

Marketing Moves attends Technology events all over the world, such as the RSA Conference in San Francisco and London Tech Week. As a result of speaking to the experts who are shaping the future of our industry, our consultants know not just what’s happening right now, but also what to expect in the years to come.
